Degrees, Nakshatra and Pada: the precision layer
The chart box shows structure; exact longitude tells you the fine-grained placement.
A Rashi spans 30°. Two planets can therefore be in the same Rashi but many degrees apart. Sign-level reading tells you the broad zodiac context; degree-level reading tells you the exact location inside that sign.
Each sidereal longitude also falls in one of 27 Nakshatras and one of four Padas. Nakshatra and Pada are therefore derived from the same exact longitude; they are not extra birth inputs.
For example, Taurus 11°14′ means the planet is 11°14′ into Rashi 2. That degree belongs to a particular Nakshatra and Pada, which the planet table calculates automatically.
Degrees matter later for Navamsha mapping, Nakshatra/Pada, exact exaltation/debilitation points, combustion distance, aspects used in Shadbala, and boundary-sensitive calculations.
A beginner should first master house + Rashi + graha. Add exact degree, Nakshatra and Pada once the basic chart is readable without hesitation.
How to read it
- Locate the fixed house position.
- Read the Rashi number in that position.
- Name the Rashi and its lord.
- Identify occupants and exact planet data.
- Explain the observation without predicting an event.
Key points
- Position tells the house; the printed number tells the Rashi.
- Observation comes before interpretation.
- Exact degree belongs in the planet table, not in a guessed chart label.
Do not skip the decoding step because a familiar planet or sign catches your eye. One isolated placement is not the whole chart.
Apply this lesson to a chart
- Open Kundli Lab and identify Houses 1, 4, 7 and 10 without using any printed house number.
- Choose one house and write: House → Rashi → lord → lord placement.
- Check your sentence against the house inspector before moving on.
