Antardasha calculation — worked method

Calculate an Antardasha duration by hand and verify why all nine sub-periods sum to the parent Mahadasha.

Every Mahadasha is divided proportionally among the same nine Vimshottari lords. The first Antardasha is ruled by the Mahadasha lord itself, then the standard sequence continues and wraps around.

The duration formula used by the course is: Mahadasha years × Antardasha-lord Vimshottari years ÷ 120. Because the nine lord-year values total 120, the nine Antardashas add back to exactly the parent Mahadasha.

Example: Jupiter Mahadasha lasts 16 years. Saturn has 19 Vimshottari years, so Jupiter/Saturn Antardasha = 16 × 19 ÷ 120 = 2.5333 Vimshottari years.

A decimal year is not automatically a fixed number of calendar months. The app converts model years to dates using its disclosed 365.2425-day educational convention so every displayed boundary is generated consistently.

Calculation only tells you the time window. Interpretation begins after locating Jupiter and Saturn in the natal chart and checking their lordships, houses, dignity, aspects, conjunctions and relevant Vargas.

STEP BY STEP

How to read it

  1. Write the Mahadasha lord and its full Vimshottari years.
  2. Write the Antardasha lord and its full years.
  3. Multiply the two values.
  4. Divide by 120.
  5. Convert to dates only with the stated year convention.
REMEMBER

Key points

  • Antardasha duration is proportional, not equal.
  • The sequence starts from the Mahadasha lord.
  • All nine Antardashas sum to the parent Mahadasha.
WORKED EXAMPLE

Apply it to a chart

Jupiter MD / Saturn AD = 16 × 19 ÷ 120 = 2.5333 Vimshottari years.

⚠ Common mistake

Do not divide a Mahadasha into nine equal pieces. The sub-periods follow the unequal 120-year lord proportions.

DO IT YOURSELF

Apply this lesson to a chart

  1. Calculate Venus Antardasha inside Saturn Mahadasha.
  2. Check your decimal result against the Dasha Timeline.
  3. Then locate Saturn and Venus in D1 without making a prediction.
